The Community Transport Service provides transport for the housebound, people with disabilities and the elderly living in the Shepway district who need a car to keep appointments, visit family or friends, go shopping etc. The service is for people who are unable to use public transport and who have no other means of transport available to them. All Transport clients must be able to get in and out of the car unaided, as our volunteer drivers are not trained to lift carry or push wheel chairs.
Requests for help can come from the person needing help, or from other voluntary organisations, hospitals or friends. requests may be on a regular or one-off basis. Transport is provided by volunteer drivers, using their own cars.
Individuals requiring transport must be a member of the service. There is an annual membership fee which, for insurance reasons must be paid before transport is provided.
How we deal with requests
1) At least two working day’s notice is needed, although we will try to help in a genuine emergency. The Transport Department is open Monday – Friday 10am – 3pm. There is an answer-phone service outside these hours.
2) The Transport office staff (most of whom are volunteers) will need as much information as possible when booking an appointment, i.e. place, date, time, if you have a walking frame/stick(s) or wheelchair (not all cars are large enough to accommodate these), if you are bringing a friend or relative for support and any other support needs you may have.
3) Expenses for journeys are charged from the drivers home and back, we will always try and get a driver nearest your home.
Membership is £12 paid to the centre per year, with 45p per a mile paid to the driver on the day of the journey plus a £1 admin fee for each journey.
